ATP Science Gut Right Review The Beautiful Existence

With good health beginning in the gut, it’s therefore important we get our gut right! This new product from ATP Science is part of their 4 Pillars of Health and is what they call a “Modbiotic”.

In terms of gut health products, this is fairly revolutionary as it also moves away from the idea of using probiotics and prebiotics as the answer (in fact, they actually say these can be part of the problem), and instead propose fixing our health via their mix of Modbiotics.

What is a Modbiotic?

ATP Science’s “Modbiotic” mix is a unique blend of polyphenols, polysaccharides, glucans, lectins and other compounds which help to reduce inflammation and obesity in the body, as well as dealing with any other problems and issues from an unbalanced gut ecosystem.

As an antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial mix, it works to get rid of all the nasties and control the growth and ratios of our gut flora, by basically getting rid of the bad bugs and increasing the good bugs (which we know is the basic idea of good gut health).

How does this differ from probiotics?

Most probiotics supplements are firmicutes (eg lactobacillus), which are sugar feeders which can apparently create inflammation and slow our metabolism. According to ATP Science, “ Using probiotics to fix overgrowth of bad bugs is like throwing grass seeds at weeds. They do not get rid of established bad bugs and usually just add more firmicutes”.

This is also why prebiotics are apparently no help either. As we already have enough sugar in our food for firmicutes to eat, there’s no reason to feed them even more. “If probiotics are like throwing grass seeds at weeds than prebiotics are like throwing fertiliser on weeds.”

So, how is a Modbiotic any different?

The compounds described above in the formula help to reduce the levels of firmicutes and increase the population of bacteroidetes.

Bacteroidetes bacteria are fat feeders which block inflammation and boost our metabolism, and an imbalance and lower population of these has been shown in subjects who have a higher rate of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

ATP Science Gut Right review chart

The chart and study as shown on the ATP Science website, demonstrates the different ratios and microbial phlya across subjects in different BMI categories (a BMI < 18.5, b BMI 18.5–24.9, c BMI 25–29.9 and d BMI ≥30).

What has caused this imbalance of our gut bacteria?

As a society in general, we eat more sugar, less fibre, less micro-nutrients and more processed food which leads to bad gut health overall, but thanks to farming and food technological advances those of us who try to eat a balanced diet still may miss out on a varied diet.

Eating the same food all year round, rather than eating seasonal produce, means we often have a constant food supply for certain microorganisms and deficiencies of others.

We also often avoid the skins, peels, seeds and pulp from fruit and vegetables, which is where all of the antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal goodness is found (and what is used in the Gut Right formula!)

So, how does Gut Right help and what will the effects be?

As explained above, the compounds contained in the formula help to rebalance our gut flora by reducing the numbers of firmicutes and promoting the growth and abundance of inflammation lowering and health promoting bacteroidetes.

The effects of correcting this balance will, like anything, depend on your own body and whatever symptoms/issues you are suffering from, but can potentially help with:

  • Modulating gut bug ratios
  • Fixing Dysbiosis, SIBO, leaky gut wall, allergies, and intolerances
  • Supporting the immune system
  • Aiding liver and detoxification pathways
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Reducing insulin resistance
  • Supporting a healthy metabolism
  • Preventing and correct fatigue disorders
  • Eliminating brain fog and aiding mental clarity
  • Improving physical and mental performance
  • Correcting firmicute: bacteroidetes ratios (kill of excess firmicute and increase deficient bacteroidetes)
  • Killing off candida (yeasts, fungi, and moulds) and other parasites

Gut Right Protocol: How to Take

ATP Science recommends when first taking this product to follow a certain kickstart protocol, which involves taking a higher dose (1 scoop 3 x daily with meals) for 10 days while also following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (details below). After this, they recommend a maintenance dose of 1 scoop x daily, and also re-following the “kick start” when needed (eg after a round of antibiotics, food poisoning, illness, bad eating etc).

The product can be mixed into water, juice, smoothies or with some honey. I simply mixed with water and had it as a shot!

Gut Right Protocol: What they say to expect

Let’s start by saying they make this journey sound pretty full on, but that it will depend on what is living inside you as to what the sounds and smells leaving you will be like (lovely!)

Due to the Herxheimer reaction (toxins released from the die off of the bad bugs) some people may also experience negative symptoms and effects such as excess burping, farting, gurgling and nausea.

Days 1 to 3:

In the start most people will experience the start of the die-off off excess microbes and old waste, which will build up gases and the purification of short chain fatty acids through the stool. “By day 3 you may suspect that something has died inside of you or possibly something dead was put inside you while you were sleeping.” Basically, this is the time for a lot of stinky farts and smells.

Days 3 to 7:

The amount of die of and dead microbe and waste elimination should be building up now, resulting in an increase of waste and continual need to poop. They highlight day 5 as the poop pinnacle for most people, but by this point the smell should start to lessen.

Days 7 to 10:

Most of the die-off and elimination has now occurred, with the Modbiotics helping the bacteroidete levels to rise and keep the general gut population in control and as the product suggests, guts are feeling right.

What is the Specific Carbohydrate diet (SCD) and why does it help?

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) basically involves eating food which contains simple sugars (monosaccharides) and avoiding complex sugars (disaccharides, olgiosaccharides and polysaccharides).

Simple sugars, which include glucose (dextrose), fructose, galactose, ribose and xylose, are absorbed quickly in the body and don’t require enzymes to help break them down. This means that they’re not only easier for the body to digest, but also less likely to ferment and feed intestinal organisms (specifically, the ones Gut Right is aiming to reduce).

So, this means not only are you introducing compounds which kill off the firmicutes you’re trying to reduce, but opting for this diet also means that your further promoting die-off by eliminating their food source.

A list of foods can be found on the ATP Science website here.

Finally, my experience with Gut Right and my thoughts:

The first time I took Gut Right I did the kick-start protocol and followed the diet too, which for me wasn’t too hard as it’s pretty similar to the diet I follow anyway.

I didn’t experience extreme reactions as they said, and wasn’t too sure if it had really done much for me. I did notice though that I was craving less sugary foods and did generally feel more “balanced” but I wasn’t sure if this was from the product.

In terms of the taste, I actually didn’t mind it, and found that by the end my body felt like it was craving it. I first tried mixing into honey which was nice, but I found hard to mix and annoying to take, so in the end just mixed it with some water in a shot glass and had as a shot! I know a lot of people complain about the taste; it’s hard to describe but if you’ve ever had chinese medicine before it’s like a milo version of that (quite bitter). As I’ve learnt though, most bitter tasting foods and herbs are actually great for you!

I had about a month off after doing the kickstart, and with my body having a general autoimmune flare up again I’ve been trying all that I can to get my body back on track and so decided to pick up another tub to try again.

This time, I didn’t follow the specific kick-start diet (but like I said, my own diet is pretty similar) and only took the product twice a day (slightly more than the recommended daily dose). About 5 days in I noticed more of the poop effects than the first time, and again physically felt by about this time that I was also craving less sugary foods again and also felt more balanced.

I also experience a lot of brain fog too with my conditions, which has actually lifted in the past week since I’ve been taking, so I’m sure this has helped too.

So, overall I did experience more of a balanced feeling, less sugar cravings and less brain fog while taking this product and it’s definitely one I’ll continue to take. It’s really hard to base recommendations of this product of anyone else’s experience as we all are so different, but I would definitely suggest people give it a try (especially if you have digestive system issues) and see how it helps you.
